Comments: Lula: Logan's Finest

I'm with you. You know, about a year or so back, i worked with a lit/art journal that is still thriving today, Bridge Magazine (i don't work for them anymore--so, full disclosure), and we asked Lula to do a couple platters for us. Through some bizarre mix-up, when i went to pick them up, someone along the line had forgotten to notify the kitchen (this was really just a weird mix-up--not anyone's fault at all), but the owner called into the kitchen and said one thing or another, and the chefs just whipped up this great mediterranean/middle eastern spread that was fantastic. i was really impressed that such good food could come out in, well, about 20 minutes, while i waited. props to the kitchen there.

Lula just keeps getting better, and by that I don't mean the food (which has always been spot on) but rather they've sort of stumbled into being an actual, professional restaurant. I think the management finally has realized that "being cool" and running a profitable restaurant are antithetical. Thus, we see fewer eyebrow rings and tribal tats, and more attention to the level of water in the drinking glasses. Anyway, Mrs. JiLS and I ate there a few nights ago and were impressed to see they've finally gone to cloth napkins (one of my biggest complaints about Lula for the past couple of years; if you're gonna charge $25 for an entree, you CANNOT serve it with paper napkins). Now if they will just pony up for some real flatware ...

After high praise from food-loving friends, a group of us tried the brunch at Lula's this past Sunday. Honestly, I wasn't that bowled over -- it's good food, but falls short of being great. I split a breakfast burrito with a friend, and shared the peanut noodles (with tofu) with her as well. The highlight of the meal was probably my husband's turkey sandwich (he particularly loved the bread) and the pork sausage that had been ordered as a side. Incidentally, all of the drinkers in our party agreed that the Bloody Mary was very, very good. I'll give it another shot, but at this point, I just don't think Lula's lives up to its hype.

Thanks for your reply Anne. I have never experienced Lula's brunch and didn't base my review on it, partly because I believe that no restaurant is at its best at brunch.

If you really want to experience the best Lula has to offer, make a point to visit during dinner.
