glad you made it to LP. i've been one of its champions since i started going there a few years back. i owe you thanks, too for introducing me to marketplace (and bhabi's kitchen, for that matter). a great place to say the least. i was like a kid in a candy store.
that said, while i'd agree that marketplace is more lively (or at least it was the one time i went versus the times i've been to LP), i went on a sat. afternoon, and the place, especially the parking lot, was a zoo. of course, the car accident immediately out front on oakton did not help matters, either. i've made a note not to retune on a weekend afternoon ;-)
I'm sort of opposite of you - I haven't been to Marketplace in several years, and should try it again.
My impression of Marketplace was it was crowded, more expensive than most independent markets and while the variety is diverse, didn't really offer much more than Lincolnwood Produce, Village Market Place on Dempster (4034 Dempster, Skokie), Devon Market or some of the other large produce markets in other suburbs. To me it didn't warrant trying to get through that parking lot or through the crowded store.
That said, it is definitely cleaner than most independents and the produce was outstanding. And I did forget that it has more Asian products than LP's mostly eastern European shelves. I will try to make it back on a weekday and take another look.
I like Lincolnwood for their awesome deli and meat counter, cheap prices, and for a few things I've come to like that I can't find in other places (i.e. a mediterranean sea salt and a certain brand of ajvar).
As I have posted (here) in the past, I love LP. The quality and selection of dry goods, deli, fresh meat and produce are all top-tier. Pricing is very reasonable. I only wish I lived closer to it. Because of the distance from my house to LP, it is, unfortunately, a 'special occasion' or 'if I'm in the area' shop-stop for me. On the plus side, it's great that it's so near the Edens and so close to NYB&B and Rolfs. Those are some of the best food shopping opportunities available anywhere in the area and it makes for a nice and usable multi-stop shop.
